Wonderful to see that Cyd has such a large, loyal, and caring fanbase, and this website is a wonderful and terrific resource, very extensive and well made. Congratulations and keep it up :) Cyd's an undeniable beauty. Her smile is comforting and sweet and just beyond pretty. She's an immense talent and I look forward to seeing more of her films :) God Bless her, and God Bless you, Chris, for remembering and honouring Cyd. You're doing a great service.

Thank you Chris, for a wonderful year of fabulous pictures and videos of Cyd! I so enjoy the site.
I hope all of you caught TCM last week when they did the 3 parts of "That's Entertainment". It was wonderful and lots of Cyd, and many wonderful comments about her from Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. She maybe gone, but is never forgotten. Thanks again Chris it's wonderful!!

Cyd Charisse was the epitomy of excellence in films in which she displayed her talents as a unique dancer. With her background in classical ballet, perhaps the transition to Hollywood Musicals was more easily accomplished, but for all of us who were priviledged to watch her performancs, I, among countless others consider ourselves fortunate for having lived in the same era, where we were able to appreciate and enjoy the marvellous talents of a gracious and wonderfully talented lady. She is ever in our memory for what she has left as a lasting legacy in song and dance.

Gotta say... whenever I am feeling blue or out of sorts, I visit You Tube and watch "Dancing in the Dark". What is it about that magical dance sequence between Miss Legs and Fred Astaire that, in 2014 as I write this, has the power to uplift and enchant anyone who sees it... not just me? My neighbor's five year old daughter saw it once with me, and she of course did not know the plot of Band Wagon, or who was who... she was just utterly riveted to the screen. (Try and get a five year old to sit still, huh?) When it was over she tugged at my sleeve and said, "Could I see that again, Aunt Dit?" Such is the power of Cyd - still!!!

I fell in love with Ms. Charisse when I was three years old. My parents took me to see a film because they couldn't find a babysitter. I met her in later years when I was in graduste school. She was as nice as she was beautiful. We kept in touch and corresponded. Rest in peace, lovely lady.

I hope some of Cyd's fans were watching TCM on New Years Eve. They showed "That's Entertainment" parts 1,2,3. Cyd was in all of them as part of many of the great dance numbers they showed. She even hosted a segment. What a elegant, beautiful lady she is. She was truly one of the great stars of yester year. Thank the Lord, for TCM & for Cyd, and all the DVD's of her dancing. She will always be with us.

I am 73 years old and of course have known who this lady was since I was a teenager. I watched "Singing" again on TCM, the other night, thank God for TCM!, and rediscovered her. In doing research I came across this site and it is great! She was indeed a very talented dancer with stunning good looks. I will certainly withhold my opinion on her acting until I see several more of her films. She also seems to be a complete person.
I did watch the Dancing In The Dark scene and it was wonderful. Can only wonder at the work these people put in as compared to the fluff and junk that passes for talent now.

My dad named me after Cyd Charisse because he had to deliver me in our home in Northridge, California, 9/29/1958. I was always proud of that name and thought it was cool to be named after such a beautiful woman and a terrific dancer. I also love to dance, but never accomplished the great things she did. I really feel I need to get to know her more so I am going to start watching her movies as soon as I graduate from college, which will be in the Spring of 2013. This is a great website, however I would like to listen to the songs she sang. Thank you.

I know that many people would disagree with "Singing in the rain" but god, Cyd was my favorite part of the movie. And that sexy green flapper dress? I swear sometimes I drool over seeing that costume on Mrs. Charisse. I wish I had it, then I can have my wife wear it sometimes. If she wanted to.

When I was a high school student during the early 1950's I worked weekends at the Rivera Country Club exercising the polo ponies riding in the scheduled polo matches. More than once while I was walking the ponies on the track around the polo field I would encounter many movie celebraties attending the games. Cyd Charisse would be one of the stars who absolutely captivated me with her grace, charm and friendliness. She never passed without wishing me well and "have a good day." She was then, and still is the very favorite film dancer and actress. There will never be an equal to her dancing ability, beauty and overall pure sex appeal. She allowed this high school student to walk in the clouds and be the topic of conversation when I was with school friends. God bless her soul!!

First, I'd like to express my deep condolences to Mr. Martin and Cyd's family.
The GREEN dress! Forever engrained as the finest example of dance (to me)! Obviously Cyd's heavenly legs were enough to set me on fire, but the movements, the subtle tilt of her head... Well, that did it for me! Thank you Cyd, for your beauty, grace, charm and raw female sensuousness, displayed, as Keats once said "A thing of beauty is a joy forever"!

Nothing could ever bring in the new year like Cyd's dancing. Happy New Year to the site and to all of you who bring it to us.

Everyone always talks about her inability to act which, I agree was faulty, but somehow I think people shouldn't forget East Side/West Side so much or even the film that she had in the works with Marilyn Monroe right before she died (I have a copy of the unfinished work -- very funny). This site should not limit itself to a favorite movie though. Within each movie, there are dances... Dancing in the Dark, Desert Song (I think that's right), the Gypsy Dance, Baby You Knock Me Out!, all of which were great but need to stand alone and be judged beyond the show themselves. I guess first and foremost, the lady was a dance queen although some of her movies (speaking roles) could also be considered artistically. Nobody ever gave her a real chance, I mean who could believe, back then that someone with such beauty had brains too? I have everything she was in, including that awful science fiction piece and the workout video... even got the autobiography that she and Tony wrote. Got 8" by 10"'s, even got the classy lady to send an autographed pic when she was alive (I'm sure someone else did it but it was still nice to get). I'm proud she was a fellow Texan and still take delight in watching what I call her "Dress Tease" in Silk Stockings. What other words are there for it when people can get just as excited to see someone put on clothes as take them off?

I watched "The Band Wagon" on TCM the other night, great movie! Robert Osborne, the host, stated that Cyd, has said that the "Dancing in the Dark" dance she did with Fred Astaire is her all time favorite dance number. It's my favorite too. It's a classic number, very simple and a beautiful espression of a very classic dance.

Happy Birthday to Cyd on what would've been her 90th birthday! You are thought of often and missed ever so much dear Cyd! " What a dame, What a dame, she belongs in the hall of fame - Baby you knock me out!" ("It's always Fair Weather")

Editor's note: biographies of Cyd Charisse don't all agree on the year of her birth, which depending on the source is anywhere between 1921 and 1924. However, the consensus is that Cyd Charisse was born in 1922, meaning that this year would have been her 89th birthday. Aside from this minor detail, a big thank you to Meghan for posting a message in honour of Cyd's birthday, even if she is no longer with us to read it.

@Dorothea: I have seen "Thousands Cheer" listed in some filmographies for Cyd Charisse. The IMDb says she does an uncredited appearance in the Don Loper number. I had included the movie in this site's filmography page until recently. I removed the movie from the list after watching the movie and not being able to spot her. The book by Jean-Claude Missiaen, which I consider to be reliable, doesn't list the movie in her filmography.

Cyd Charisse is the best dancer that has ever appeared on screen. I cannot go two days without watching one of her dances. It was so sad when she died in 2008 because that was the year that me and my family became aware of Cyd. I've tried to watch ever movie that she dances but I still haven't got to see "Meet me in Las Vegas", and I love her performance of Frankie and Johnny. So, does anyone know where I can find that movie??? Cyd is the best! She's my idol. I love her!

  Hello My Friends,
I maybe a day late and a dollar short, but I just finished reading "The Two of Us" writen by Tony Martin & Cyd. What a lovely book. Very interesting about Cyd and Tony's life. Also the insight she has about dancing with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. I never knew much about either one of them, but sure do now, a great read! I recommend it highly Happy reading!

This lady, who is much more than just an outstanding artist, has been a very special person to this 80 year-old fan. Her professional dancing ability, plus her demeanor as an actress, has created a spot in my life I like to think of as "My Safety Deposit Vault of Outstanding Memories."
Not only are very few performers allowed in, very few 'outsiders' are allowed to view those in my personal sanctus sanctorium. My thanks, my admiration, my unattached love to a wonderful credit to her profession, and thus, my enjoyment!

Though I haven't seen much of Cyd Charisse's films, I find that I am very impressed with her amazing dance ability and underrated beauty. This is only my opinion, but to me, she resembles Ava Gardner, and they were both born in the same year. I am hoping to see The Band Wagon, and more of her pairings with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.   I am amazed at how she could express moods, emotions and attitudes with her body and limbs. She was also a good looking woman with possibly the sexiest legs in movies.   There are no words appropriate enough. I almost never gush about movie stars or film legends, but Cyd was different. I indulged in her loveliness for years while she was alive and marveled at her longevity on this earth. I even sent her a fan letter way back in 1983, telling her how stunningly sexy she was just twirling around in a camisole, stockings, and a transparent slip in "Silk Stockings." I was in college then, and considered the matter closed after dropping the letter in the mail. A month later, she answered me back with a nice 5x7 photo with a 'thanks' and her signature on the front. I've been dancing on air myself ever since. What a dame indeed. God rest her.

I grew up on films the whole family could watch together, including many with this talented dancer and actress. I always enjoyed her in "The Harvey Girls", because it shows her classiness - she made the most of every small role. She was married for nearly 60 years people! Cyd was the epitome of grace and charm - a class act from start to finish. God bless her memory, and may God be with her family during this time of sadness.

I was listening to the news and I heard Cyd had died, I was devastated. I always enjoy legs, about 4 years ago I saw at the London Palladium a tribute to Fred Astaire by his daughter; her special guests included Tony Martin and Cyd Charisse; her red dress was split to the thigh, showing her lovely legs. Alas the legs are now at rest.

It was the summer of 1953, I was 12 years old, my brother 9 years old; it was a hot summer day we decided to go to the movies and see "The Band Wagon." We only paid 9 cents at the central theater in Somerville, MA, and for 9 cents what a deal!

Favorite Cyd Charisse movie: Deep in my Heart (1954)
Cyd was my inspiration throughout my awkward teens and forever. Her grace became my grace when my stumblings and insecurities overcame the moment. "How would Cyd get through this" was my mantra and it got me through. Of all her movies (I saw them all) my favorite dance number was in "Deep In My Heart." Her Desert Song (One Alone) dance was seductive and classy. She alone had that capability. I would love to see a DVD of all of her famous dance numbers including her guest appearances on Fred Astaire's and other shows and Concerts. She was one of a kind and my hero forevcer. Rest in grace and peace.

I found out Cyd Charisse died from a friend's parent. And I literally almost burst into tears at the mention of it. I had to look it up just to confirm it and to my dismay it was true. I was reading some of the messages in the guestbook and I, too, thought she would have lived to be in her 90's as well. Such a classy and beautiful dame. And those legs! Not even Stacy Keibler, with her 42-in chlegs could beat her. Like those boxers say in It's Always Fair Weather: "What a dame! What a dame! She belongs in the Hall of Fame!" I love you Cyd Charisse. R.I.P. You will never be forgotten. Never.

One of my favorites from the golden age of Hollywood - Miss Charisse was charm, grace, beauty and class. As a collector of MGM musicals, some of my most memorable moments on film are her dances with Gene Kelly & Fred Astaire; true classics. My heartfelt condolences to her family - rest in peace, Miss Charisse - you will always be beloved and a gift to the world of entertainment.

I fell in love with Tony Martin at 12 years old, (I am 59 now), when I saw him in "The Ziegfield Girl" and became aware of Cyd as his wife. She became my absolute, lifelong example to follow of everything desirable in a woman. I have never come close to being like her, but it has added greatly to my existence to have tried. I loved that she had all those years of love and joy with Tony and her family. God bless and God rest.

She was so elegant and her dancing talent was amazing. One of our very best is gone now, but her movies are with us forever. Aren't we lucky to have them!

I was shocked to hear of Cyd's death on Tuesday: I'd always assumed she'd live to her late 90's at least... I wish I'd known she was at Feinstein's (see earlier post) this past January; I would have loved to have seen her there, practically in my own neighborhood! (I used to live and work in Beverly Hills, too). She will always remain, for me, the paragon, not only of beauty, but of artistic perfection; and she may very well have been the greatest example of how the two are twined. May there be a place where Cyd is always dancing, each nuance just perfect, as before... My condolences to her family.

I was a little girl living with just my Dad when Cyd Charisse came on our black-and-white Admiral TV, probably in some variety show. Dad spent most of her number wiping imaginary sweat from his forehead and grinning. I got the idea then that she was something special... and have never stopped loving her. Heaven is an even nicer place now, my dear.

Today nothing compares with the entertainment that the artists like Cyd brought us to the screen in the 40's and 50's.

Ms. Charisse will always be the most glamourous and beautiful of all dancers on the MGM lot during the Golden Era. She danced her way across the screen with all the big stars from Astaire to Kelly. A true professional dedicated to her art and never once compromised her personal life to her true calling... dance! She is gorgeous in every one of the films that the public was so fortunate to see her in and we are truly blessed to have her beauty, grace and class captured on the screen... Forever, for future generations to learn from and enjoy. You performed so admirably, Cyd Charisse, and your footsteps are welcome in Heaven.   I have the video of Silk Stockings, have watched it so many times, what a beautiful lady she was, those legs alone were definitely worth 3 million dollars, I know she had them insured. I was a dancer for 20 years in England, so I really appreciate the study and long hours you have to dedicate, the number in Silk Stockings, she danced Red Blues, her fouettes and turns were amazing. Such balance and execution. I met her and Tony Martin in the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in 1992, she was so elegant and poised then, and Tony was such a handsome man.   I so admire your dancing ability. My favorite dance scenes are you and Astaire in "The Band Wagon" in the nightclub and you in the Boxing Club dancing with the boxers (in "It's Always Fair Weather"). You are an inspiration and there will never be anyone like you again. My father abandoned my mother and I when I was very little... there was never any money for dance lessons. So as an adult, I took a tap class and cried all the way home. The "little girl" in me just loved it.   A fantastic site! There is no doubt that Cyd Charisse is the most passionate and elegant of dancers. The Hollywood stars from yesteryear certainly knew how to exude their charm and sexuality with none of the crudness that there seems to be nowadays. I have admired her for years and when I did ballet I really wanted legs like hers (still do!) I recently watched the video of Deep in my Heart again, and the Desert Song has to be my all time favourite. I am getting married in September and I just have to get a dress made identical to Cyd's when she is performing in the Desert Song. If anyone knows where I can find any photos of the dress please let me know (I'll also need a good dressmaker and probably a large bank balance!!)

Cyd has been my favorite female dancer since I was a child. She is just incredible. Not only can she dance, but she also sings and acts. She is such a beautiful woman, with non-stop legs. I just finished watching the 3-That's Entertainment segments on TMC. She was featured quite a bit. I could watch her perform all night. My favorite dance number if I have to pick one, would be the dance with Fred Astaire, "Dancing In The Dark." I really love and admire this lady.   I discovered Cyd at 13, on late night TV, with the rest of the house asleep and was instantly in love. I still am, I guess. While "Red Blues", "Heather on the Hill", "Dancing in the Dark", "Baby You Knock Me Out" all still stun and amaze me, "Fated To Be Mated" is the one that breaks my heart. Cyd and Fred look so happy just to be dancing, and by this time MGM and the musical were starting to fall apart. But there they were, dancing on through the fire and still giving it all they had. What pros, what dancers, what joy she's given me!

Thanks for such a great site. I just finished watching the movie Till the Clouds Roll By (which I bought because she was in it.) I wanted to make sure that it was her and found this great site. The individual movie shots of her are great. It was a bit part and I was sure it was her, but wanted the confirmation. I can't wait to check out the rest of the site.

  Dear Cyd,
The first time I got to see you, was in Switzerland after WWII, that was in Wil, SG-Cinema. Of course it was your figure and the LEGS which I admired!! Since you're also a Pisces Person, born on March 8, 1922, I am born March 15, 1922 we are the same age! And you look always so good and Happy Birthday to you.

I never saw anyone dance quite like Ms. Charisse and I guess I never will again. I liked to watch Juliette Prowse and Joey Heatherton, but Ms. Charisse was my favorite.

Growing up wanting to be a dancer, I went to every musical movie I could. I was so impressed even as a child with the grace and beauty of this marvelous dancer. As an adult I appreciate even more not only her style but her classic delivery of her every movement. When I watch her dance I am transfixed by her wonderful talent. When Cyd Charisse danced, whether it be ballet or jazz, she brought to dance, a sophistication and class that only she could. She has given me many hours of happiness and joy through her talent. Thank you Cyd and may God continue to bless you.

I have been admirer of Cyd Charisse since childhood. My mother would say, "Now watch her! How beautifully she moves, see how graceful she is!" And my Dad would add, "Wow, what a gorgeous woman." Now I'm nearly 60 myself, and I still watch her movies at every opportunity. No one could ever compare to her. I wish she could dance for us forever. God Bless her!

Cyd Charisse, wow you are so awesome, I can't say I'm familiar with your movies, and I do apologize, I'm not much of a movie watcher, as I rarely almost never watch TV. For a reason maybe a few. You have always been my favorite star. If I were asked or able to meet anyone in the world, you would be my first choice and only choice, as I never have thought much about who else I would like to meet. My name is Cyd Charisse, too. My dad must have thought you were hot. As Ann Margaret too, was one of his faves, and look at her and you now, still beautiful, gorgeous, a life full of life and memories and stories to share and tell. I hope one day that I will have the opoortunity and the pleasure of meeting you, why do some peoples paths cross then, some paths never connect. Hopefully one day our roads would meet, even if for a brief minute. Thank you, I felt I have known you all my life.

Cyd had a specialty number with James Mitchell (a wonderful partner). It was incredibly sexy. Also her true life husband Tony Martin had a great number, "Lover Come Back To Me". Lots of stars, but Cyd was tops.

You are my absolute favorite actress. I really love your dancing - such grace is always timeless. I'm a huge fan of all the movies from that era. I'm only 15, but I know I'll be a fan for the rest of my life. And if that wasn't cool enough, I'm from Texas too!

I just recently became a major fan of Cyd Charisse. I was named after her and I am also a dancer. I love dance and I am a fan of black and white musicals even though I was born in 1972. During her era you had to know how to dance cat and sing and also be beautiful. I think Cyd Charisse is a class act all around and nobody can work a leg like her. I would love to meet her and tallk to her regarding her career, does she ever do appeareances? Anyway keep up the good work and I love the website.

A short auto-biography... From movie abstinence to a movie addict, as a result, I discovered Cyd Charisse late in my life, but what a discovery. Elegant: without a doubt. Beautiful: beyond words. Graceful: for the ages. She is all this and more. A beauty, a talent, a presence that is timeless.

Nice website. I was watching a documentary about Gene Kelly, anatomy of a dancer, and Cyd came by with dancing songs and an interview. Just great.
Monroe was the best, but Cyd comes really close!

I haved loved all the musicals of Cyd Charisse. The most beautiful legs of any dancer of all times. What a woman!!
I have loved her all my life. I wish that she would come to San Antonio, TX on a visit so we can see her. I have always wondered if she had any latin blood in her. They just don't make women like her...beautiful, elegant and with a lot of class. May God bless for making me so happy to watch her movies over and over.

What can I say? The minute I first saw that elegant dance scene with Fred Astaire in The Band Wagon I fell in love. Now I can't get enough of Cyd, and I know why Gene Kelly called her "the lovely Cyd Charisse". I only wish I had gotten to know you many years ago, but thank God you will remain alive on film for many, many years to come. Bless you my dear, and thanks for your wonderful work over the years.

I suddenly remembered - did anybody catch that Janet Jackson video done a couple of years ago? Can't remember the name (somebody help me, out there!) but Janet confesses she has ALWAYS admired Cyd. So Janet bops through this imaginary town, and suddenly a tall, stunning woman comes out of nowhere and joins her in a little dance. The MINUTE she starts moving, you know it's Cyd Charisse. Still classy, still leggy, matching Janet step for step, natch... Wowee!!
Editor's note: the video that Cindy is referring to here is Janet Jackson's "Alright" music video from 1990, featuring Cyd Charisse and Cab Calloway.

Favorite Cyd Charisse movie: Party Girl (1958)
With Tony Martin singing that catchy title tune ("underneath your mascara, everyone knows you're hiding a tear or two...") Cyd plays a sophisticated 1930's era leggy showgirl (Vicki Gaye!) who turns out to have beauty, brains, AND guts, capturing the heart (and raising the consciousness) of mob lawyer Tommy Farrell (Robert Taylor), while catching the raunchy eye of sleazo gangster second banana John Ireland. What a movie! Okay, go on and tell me... it's a silly Nicholas Ray shmaltzfest, but guess what?.. when Miss Charisse dances, and strolls across the room, saying things like, "I'm not afraid of Louie Cannetta, or Rico Angelo (played by Lee J. Cobb!)", man, like... all the bad dialogue is forgiven, girlfriend. In my book she always will be - one classy dame. Long may she wave... Cyd was THE REAL DEAL!!!

I saw Cyd and Tony in Vegas in 74.
Cyd was as beautiful as she was in 58. I am sixty nine years old and a retired pilot. I have lived a very exciting life as a bush pilot in Canada. I havn't missed much in life. Cyd, however, is the only celebrity I have ever wanted to meet and spend time with. Of course, being Texan by birth I like the fact that she is From Amarillo. I hope she is doing well and continues to be active at this time in life.

  Dear Cyd,
If you are reading this, I want you to know that you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen! You are so talented and you project such a sophisticated, strong, cool and very feminine personality in your movies! Thank you for all those unforgettable movie moments. I wish it would have been me and not Fred giving you that kiss in front of the fireplace in Silk Stockings...
Best regards,

I do not see Cyd's and her husband Tony Martin movie bits in "Deep In My Heart". She did an incredibly sexy dance to the Desert Song. The dress was by Helen Rose and it looks like it was inspired in part by Grace Kelly's wedding dress from the waist up. Cyd was my role model growing up.

I was named after Cyd Charisse, as my dad was in the generation of those times, when stars were really stars,as he also admires Ann Margaret. I've ALWAYS wanted to meet Cyd Charisse, as the closest I had come close to her, was standing in front of her house in front of a gate, that had a very long driveway that led up to her house in LA. My sister too, also, lived in London where she was able to get me an autographed picture of this wonderful lady who I very much have adored all my life. And now... to find her name, my name, OUR name on the internet, is so incredibly amazing. Thank you so much for this site, and the beautiful photos, she is most definitely still a beautiful lady. What is Cyd doing now, and would there ever be a chance of me, ever getting to see her or meet her one day? Thank you so so very much once again.

I was a good friend of her son Nick at Menlo College and remember crusing in Nick's new 1959 silver Corvette (and complaining about the rattling noise the stick shifter made). Meeting Nick's mom, then Mrs. Martin, was a great pleasure as was watching her in the films she graced.

This website is a fitting tribute to a great star. Cyd Charisse has made some exceptional movies and its very difficult to chose a favourite, I like 'The Unfinished Dance' for the storyline, I think 'The Bandwagon' was great for its entertainment but I have to choose 'Silk Stockings' as my favourite Cyd Charisse movie because I think the plot, comedy, dancing and songs are excellent. I admire how Cyd managed to keep a completely dead-pan serious expression on her face at times when the scenes were extremely funny. Finally Cyd's lightening quick dancing to 'Red Blues' is my favourite Cyd Charisse dance number.

I love all her dancing scenes in that movie...especially the one where she comes out in white with a long sheet flying up to the sky. Her legs and feet are so sensous. Also the dance scene of the move with Gene Kelly of "Brigadoon". There are no modern dancers that can dance so beautifully as her. Thank you for all the photos of her monthly film gallery.
