Columba, a small Mexican village - three friends each have their own love story. Alejandro Castillo, the son of Don Carlos, marries, against his will, the rich Elena Cantu. But she soon discovers Alejandro's love for Maria, an impoverished girl. When he is diagnosed with a fatal tumor, the man decides to make Maria the only legatee of his goods. After Alejandro's death, Don Carlos meets Maria and decides to adopt her.
The second friend, Ruben, a street vendor, and Lola de Torrano, the sister of a famous matador, fall in love with each other. Unfortunately, the matador hates his sister's beloved and to break them up permanently, slyly convinces the peddler to enter the dangerous bullring. But the scheme fails spectacularly, and the matador is the one that gets killed.
The third friend, Pepe Gonzales, falls in love with Eufemia Calderon, a girl from the rival village of Milpa Verde. But before the young lovers can marry, the long time feud between the two villages must end.
